What Is JEE Main?
JEE Main is a two-paper exam. Paper 1 is for B.E./B.Tech admission, while Paper 2A (B.Arch) and Paper 2B (B.Planning) are for architecture and planning courses. Your score does two jobs: it decides your rank for NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes (and many state and private colleges), and it decides whether you can sit for JEE Advanced, the gateway to the IITs. Because there are two sessions, you can use the January attempt to learn the exam and the April attempt to improve; the better of your scores counts.

JEE Main 2027 Registration and Application Form
The application is completely online. You register once and can opt for one or both sessions. The six steps below match the process followed in earlier years; the 2027 bulletin will confirm any change. Our step-by-step guide to the JEE Main 2027 application form covers each screen in detail.
- Register: open the NTA portal, choose “New Registration” and enter your name, date of birth, contact details and a password. Save the application number you receive.
- Fill in the form: log in and add personal, parent and academic details, your category and the paper(s) you want to take.
- Choose exam cities: you can list up to four cities in order of preference. NTA tries to give your first choice but may allot another.
- Upload documents: photograph, signature and the other certificates in the size and format NTA specifies.
- Pay the fee: online by card, net banking or UPI. The fee is not refundable.
- Download the confirmation page: keep a printout; you will need the application number for the admit card, answer key and result.
Keep your credentials safe and see our guide to JEE Main login if you forget your password or application number.
JEE Main 2027 Application Fee
NTA has not announced the 2027 fee. The table shows the 2026 fee for exam centres in India as a reference; the 2027 figures are likely to be similar. Full details are on our application fee page.
| Category (one paper, India centres) | Male | Female |
| General | ₹1,000 | ₹800 |
| Gen-EWS / OBC-NCL | ₹900 | ₹800 |
| SC / ST / PwD / Third gender | ₹500 | ₹500 |
Applying for two or more papers roughly doubles the fee, and centres outside India cost much more (between ₹2,500 and ₹5,000 for one paper in the 2026 cycle). Service charges and GST are extra.
Documents Required
Keep these ready before you start: a valid email ID and mobile number, a recent photograph, your signature, Class 10 details for name and date of birth, Class 12 details, a photo ID, and a category or PwD certificate if you claim a benefit. Our documents required checklist lists the size and format of each upload.
Form Correction
NTA usually opens a short correction window after registration closes. Only the fields NTA permits can be edited, and some changes carry an extra fee. Read the JEE Main 2027 form correction page before the window opens.
JEE Main 2027 Eligibility Criteria
- Qualifying exam: you should have passed Class 12 (or an equivalent exam) in 2025 or 2026, or be appearing in 2027.
- Subjects: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are the core subjects for Paper 1. Paper 2A and 2B have their own subject requirements in the bulletin.
- Age limit: there is no age limit to appear.
- Attempts: three consecutive years, with two sessions each year, so a maximum of six attempts.
- The 75% rule: you do not need 75% in Class 12 to appear in JEE Main. The rule applies at the admission stage for NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes: 75% in Class 12 or a place in your board’s top 20 percentile (65% for SC/ST candidates). Check the 2027 bulletin for the final wording.
- Diploma holders may appear in the exam, but admission to NITs and IIITs through JEE Main has its own conditions, so read the bulletin before applying.
Seat quotas by category are explained in our guide to JEE Main reservation criteria.
JEE Main 2027 Exam Pattern
NTA has not published the 2027 pattern. Until it does, plan on the pattern used in 2026.
Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech)
|
Subject |
Section A (MCQ) | Section B (numerical) | Questions | Marks |
| Physics | 20 | 5 | 25 |
100 |
|
Chemistry |
20 | 5 | 25 | 100 |
| Mathematics | 20 | 5 | 25 |
100 |
|
Total |
60 | 15 | 75 |
300 |
Each subject has two sections. Section A has multiple-choice questions; Section B has numerical-value questions where you type the answer. In recent bulletins all five Section B questions are compulsory.
Paper 2A (B.Arch) and Paper 2B (B.Planning)
|
Paper |
Parts | Questions | Marks | Mode |
| 2A (B.Arch) | Mathematics, Aptitude Test, Drawing Test | 25 + 50 + 2 = 77 | 400 |
CBT + paper |
|
2B (B.Planning) |
Mathematics, Aptitude Test, Planning-based questions | 25 + 50 + 25 = 100 | 400 |
CBT |
Mathematics carries 100 marks and the Aptitude Test 200 marks in both papers. The Drawing Test (Paper 2A) is worth 100 marks and is done on paper; the Planning section (Paper 2B) carries 100 marks.
Marking scheme and shifts
- Correct answer: +4 marks. Wrong answer: −1 mark, for both MCQs and numerical questions. Unattempted: 0.
- Two shifts run each day: 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon and 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Papers of 3 hours 30 minutes run 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM to 6:30 PM.
- The paper is available in 13 languages; the regional-language options depend on the exam city you choose.
JEE Main 2027 Syllabus
The syllabus is based on the Class 11 and Class 12 NCERT curriculum for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. NTA releases the official PDF with the information bulletin, and available information suggests it will follow the 2026 syllabus unless NTA announces otherwise. Download the PDF as soon as it is out and check it chapter by chapter, because topics are sometimes trimmed. The main areas are:
- Physics: units and measurement, kinematics, laws of motion, work-energy-power, rotational motion, gravitation, properties of matter, thermodynamics and kinetic theory, oscillations and waves, electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism and electromagnetic induction, alternating current, electromagnetic waves, ray and wave optics, dual nature of matter, atoms and nuclei, semiconductor electronics.
- Chemistry: physical chemistry (mole concept, atomic structure, thermodynamics, equilibrium, solutions, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics), inorganic chemistry (periodic table, chemical bonding, p-, d- and f-block elements, coordination compounds) and organic chemistry (general organic chemistry, hydrocarbons, haloalkanes, alcohols, phenols and ethers, aldehydes, ketones and carboxylic acids, amines, biomolecules).
- Mathematics: sets, relations and functions, complex numbers and quadratic equations, matrices and determinants, permutations and combinations, binomial theorem, sequences and series, limits, continuity and differentiability, integral calculus, differential equations, coordinate geometry, three-dimensional geometry, vector algebra, trigonometry, statistics and probability.
JEE Main 2027 City Slip and Admit Card
The city intimation slip tells you which city your centre is in, usually a week or two before the exam. The admit card follows a few days before your shift and carries your roll number, exam date, shift timing and exact centre. You need a printed admit card and a valid photo ID to enter the exam hall. Download both only from the official NTA portal.
JEE Main 2027 Result, Score and Rank
- NTA releases a provisional answer key and your recorded response sheet first. You can challenge answers within the window by paying a per-question fee, and the final key follows.
- Results are published as NTA scores (percentiles), not raw marks. If you appear in both sessions, the better NTA score is used for your rank.
- If candidates tie on NTA score, NTA applies tie-break rules based on subject-wise scores and the number of wrong answers.
- Paper 1 ranks decide the NIT, IIIT and CFTI seats; the top-ranked candidates (about 2.5 lakh in recent years, category-wise) qualify to register for JEE Advanced.
Colleges, JoSAA Counselling and Admission
JEE Main scores are accepted by NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutes through JoSAA, by many state engineering colleges and by private universities. IIT admission goes through JEE Advanced. JoSAA counselling has usually started around June, after the JEE Advanced result, and runs in several rounds of choice filling and seat allotment. Seats left over are filled through CSAB. The exact 2027 schedule will be announced later.
How to Prepare for JEE Main 2027
About 13 weeks remain before Session 1 begins on 22 January 2027. A simple three-phase plan works for most students:
- Weeks 1–6, finish and fix the basics: complete any pending chapters and read NCERT line by line, especially for Chemistry. Make a one-page formula sheet for each subject.
- Weeks 7–10, practise by chapter: solve previous years’ questions topic-wise and take a short chapter test every few days. Keep an error log of every mistake and its cause.
- Weeks 11–13, simulate the exam: take full-length mocks in the real shift timings, review each one for the same day, and spend the last days revising your error log and formula sheets.
- Train speed and accuracy together: with −1 for every wrong answer, a guess you cannot reason out is rarely worth it.
- Attempt the five numerical questions in each subject carefully; they are compulsory and have no options to fall back on.
- Treat Session 1 as a full attempt, not a trial. Your better score counts, so a strong January result lets you approach April with less pressure.
JEE Main 2027 Exam Day Guidelines
- Carry a printed admit card, a valid photo ID and the passport-size photograph used in your application.
- Visit the centre the day before if possible, and reach at least an hour before reporting time.
- Electronic devices, gadgets and snacks are not allowed. Follow the dress code on your admit card: light clothing, no jewellery or metal items, and simple footwear such as sandals or slippers.
- Follow the invigilators’ instructions, and sign and paste your photograph on the attendance sheet where asked.
